Voter Tip #4–What is the difference in registering by mail vs. in person?
When you register in person at the Election Commission office, you must provide a current Tennessee or Federally issued photo ID with your current residential address, or a Tennessee or Federally issued photo ID with your correct name and two pieces of mail that have been mailed to you at your current address. Proof of residency will already be established and you will be able to vote absentee, early or on Election Day by only showing an acceptable photo ID.
When registering by mail, you will be required to vote in person the first time and to show proof of residency either by a current TN driver’s license or a Tennessee or Federally issued photo ID along with two pieces of mail with your current address. At the time of sending in your registration, you must only provide the completed form without further documentation. However, you will not be allowed to vote absentee and must vote in person for your first election.
*Exception- Those voters who are on the permanent absentee voting register.
